From Hidden to Honored: Embracing Your Authentic Identity as a Late-Diagnosed Neurodivergent

Hey there, fellow travelers on this wild journey of self-discovery! ๐ŸŒˆ Have you ever felt like youโ€™re wearing a mask, smiling on the outside while your true self hides beneath the surface? As late-diagnosed or neuro-questioning Neurodivergent, many of us walk around with this invisible facade, adapting to a world that often doesnโ€™t quite get us. But guess what? It's time to peel off that mask and celebrate the beautiful, authentic YOU!

I can relate to this journey on a deeply personal level. I wasnโ€™t diagnosed with ADHD and OCD until I turned 25, and it wasnโ€™t until I hit 30 that I was diagnosed as Autistic. Around the age of 28, everything clicked. I had this stark realization that I was living to please everyone around me, limiting myself with fears and behaviors that werenโ€™t serving me. I didnโ€™t even know what โ€œmaskingโ€ was or that I had been doing it for 28 years just to survive. I just knew that every single part of me that I thought was me was really just a collection of masks I wore for others.

I was terrified of everythingโ€”making friends, driving, and even going back to work after being a stay-at-home mom for eight years! It was a confusing and frustrating time, but it was also the moment the core of my โ€œCELLF Awarenessโ€ Method was born. From age 28 to 30, I adopted the motto: F@$#! FEAR!!! I began to truly listen to my inner voice, not just hear it but ACT on it.

I started tuning out my OCD Narrator, who constantly told me I wasnโ€™t good enough or that I wasnโ€™t doing things the โ€œrightโ€ way. Instead, I began listening to my SOUL. I colored my hair purple, got tattoos, and did things I would NEVER HAVE DONE before but always wanted to. And let me tell you, I felt LIBERATED! That same year, I got certified as a Life Coachโ€”but instead of practicing with others like my teachers suggested, I decided to make myself my first client. I took myself through all the processes I learned as a coach.

And you know what happened? I made THE MOST AMAZING FRIENDS, ones Iโ€™m still close to today. I LOVE TO DRIVE!!! Driving with my dogs and my music blasting is my slice of heaven, something I kept from myself for so long out of fear. When I finally discovered who I was FULLY and what I was TRULY CAPABLE OF, I became unstoppable. Every goal I set, from buying a house to coaching neurodivergent teens, I crushed it! I even launched my own LLC and private practice. Every ounce of what I do is authentic, and all I want more than anything is to give that gift to my fellow Neurodivergent family and anyone else I can help along the way.

Now, letโ€™s talk about unmasking. Itโ€™s not just about shedding the layers; itโ€™s about embracing your quirks, your sensitivities, and yes, even your challenges. Think of it as a treasure hunt! Each piece of your true identity is like a gem waiting to be discovered. Have you ever felt that moment of clarity when you finally understood a part of yourself that had been hidden? Thatโ€™s the magic of self-discovery!

But, I get itโ€”the fear of change can be paralyzing. You may worry that unveiling your true self will lead to judgment or misunderstanding. Trust me, youโ€™re not alone in this. Weโ€™ve all faced that internal conflict, caught between the desire to conform and the urgent need for authenticity. But hereโ€™s the kicker: the world needs your unique voice! Your experiences, your creativity, your perspectiveโ€”they matter. Itโ€™s time to reclaim your power and let your true identity shine!

And letโ€™s be real; this journey isnโ€™t always easy. It takes resilience, support, and a whole lot of self-love. Surround yourself with people who uplift you. Seek out communities that celebrate your individuality. Remember, every step you take toward authenticity is a step toward liberation. So, what are you waiting for?

Now, hereโ€™s a little challenge for you: take a moment today to reflect. Whatโ€™s one way you can start embracing your true self? Share your thoughts with us in the comments! Your journey can inspire others who are on the same path.
